Module: Hard Hoof: Portals (hardhoof_portals)

A Hard Hoof world is a whole planet. It has continents with names, seas between them, ice at the poles and jungle at the equator, and it loops: walk far enough east and you come back from the west, and go north past the pole to come up from the south. It is built for a server where groups settle different continents and build towns along the coasts and rivers.

New worlds start as a Hard Hoof Planet. On the Create World screen, World tab, the World Type button switches back to Default and the other vanilla types. On a dedicated server, set level-type=hardhoof_portals:planet in server.properties.

The Tall World is the same planet eight times as tall, from y -1536 to 1535, with seas and ranges over a kilometre deep and high. It is a preview in 0.6.0.

What a world looks like

  • Continents, five by default, each with a name ("Eskelrim", "Varomark"). The largest is where you spawn: temperate, flat land near a coast or river.
  • Seas keep the continents apart, with shallow shelves along every coast (easy to bridge and to build ports on) and deep water further out. Archipelagos and the odd remote mushroom island.
  • Land rises gently from the coast. Some regions are open plains, some are hill country. One coast of each continent has a mountain range; others stand inland. Cliffs are bare rock.
  • Rivers start in the hills, join, and reach the sea as wide rivers in broad valleys, which makes them good roads for boats. Lakes sit in the lowlands.
  • Climate runs in bands: about a sixth of the world is ice at the poles, then taiga, then forests and plains, then savanna, desert and jungle around the equator. Continental interiors are drier than coasts.
  • Below ground: lush caves under wet land, dripstone under dry land, and patches of the deep dark, so ancient cities can be found.
  • Strongholds are spread over the planet on dry land, about one to every 1400 × 1400 blocks (nine on the default world). An Eye of Ender points the short way round the loop.

Customize

Create World > World > Customize (with Hard Hoof Planet selected). On the right is the real map of the world you will get with the seed on the Create World screen. Hover it for places and biomes. Click a setting to go forward, right-click (or shift-click) to go back, or scroll over it.

Setting What it does
Style Several settings at once: Continents (5, 55% sea), One continent, Archipelago (7 broken continents, many islands), Highlands (4 rugged continents), Flatlands (3 low continents, most room to build), Water world (2 small continents). Changing a setting by hand shows Custom.
Size How far round the world is, in chunks, east to west: 1 to 1024. The default 256 is 4096 blocks, about a 16-minute walk round.
Shape Square, or Wide: half as far round north to south, like a map of the Earth.
Continents 1 to 12 landmasses.
Sea How much of the world is water, 0 to 95%.
Land Flat, Plains, Hills, Mountains or Islands: how high and broken the land is.
Climate Poles and equator, or one climate everywhere (Frozen to Hot).
Biomes How big each forest, desert and plain is: Small, Normal, Large or Huge.
Rivers, Caves, Structures On or off.
Seasons, Year The axial tilt (off, or Earth's 23 degrees and others) and the days in a year (new; see Weather & time).
Terrain, Tectonics, Layout, Dig-through centre On Tall-capable worlds only: Planetary or Classic height, the plates, the layout and a dig-through centre. See Tall World.
New map Rolls a new seed into the Create World screen and draws its world, so you can look for continents you like.

World map

Press M (rebind it in Controls) on any Hard Hoof planet, including worlds from the Dimension Creator. The map shows the whole planet as it was generated: continent names, biomes and relief, a grid with coordinates, the equator, the spawn (gold diamond), you (gold arrow) and your teammates (arrows in their team's colour). Players you share no team with are not shown. The planet is drawn once at full strength and its repeats round it dimmed, because it loops.

  • Drag to move, scroll to zoom. Find me centres on you.
  • Waypoints: right-click a spot, or press Mark where I am, and give it a name (a town, a port, a meeting point). A new waypoint is private: only you see it. Publish it to share it with everyone on the planet, or send it to a team or to players. Shift + right-click one of your pins to take it away. Server operators can take any public pin away.
  • The Waypoints and Teams tabs at the top right open a panel beside the map.

Map layers

The rail down the map's left edge, or the keys 1 to 9 and 0, lay one layer over the map at a time. The whole map is described in The world map. A legend at the bottom left says how to read it, and the plate at the top right says what the map knows about the place under your pointer: the land and biome, height or depth, mean air temperature, air pressure, the weather now, the local time with the next sunrise or sunset, and on a Tall World the tectonic province.

Key Layer Shows
1 Terrain The map as it always was.
2 Weather Rain, snow and thunder where they fall now, cloud, wind arrows, highs and lows with isobars, each storm's heading, and lightning of the last two minutes. It comes from the server while the map is open, about every five seconds. It needs Hard Hoof Environment.
3 Time Day, twilight and night by longitude, the hour lines, the sun at noon, the sunrise and sunset lines, and the date line where the day steps back going east.
4 Temperature Mean air on land and the sea's surface temperature at sea, with isotherms; 0 °C in white.
5 Relief Height tints and hillshade, contours on land, and depths and isobaths at sea.
6 Climate Climate zones, the snow line and the prevailing winds. Press 6 again for rainfall.
7 Geology Tectonic provinces on a Tall World, and the ores each is richest in (tin in the hills on a Classic world). Every ore is also found everywhere, sparse.
8 Tectonics The plates of a Tall World, their motion and boundaries (new).
9 Water Rivers, basins, floodplains, currents, waves, floods and tsunami hazards (new). See Water.
0 Claims Who holds each chunk (new).

The map shows the weather now. It cannot forecast: storms grow and die as they go.

See Teams and waypoints for the panel, sending waypoints and teams.

The map shows the land as generated, not what players have built on it.

Crossing the edge

The world has no edge to find: past it is the same world again. Crossing the seam does not reload your view, on any size of world: the land stays drawn.

Still rough at the edge:

  • Animals, items and other players just past the edge appear once you cross.
  • Light does not spread across the edge, so a torch right at it lights only its own side.
  • Villages and other structures can be cut where they meet the edge (strongholds are kept clear of it).
  • Worlds made before continents keep generating the land they started with.
