Rope, the Rope Ladder and the Rope Coil are the hand-made way up and down a tall world: no power, no machines. Rope is the fast way down, the Rope Ladder the faster way up. The lifts that come later carry loads and people further and faster.

Crafting
All three are made on a crafting table.
| Recipe | Ingredients | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Rope | 3 String in a column | 12 Rope |
| Rope (plant fibre) | 3 Vines, Twisting Vines or Weeping Vines in a column (#hardhoof_tech:plant_fibres) |
6 Rope |
| Rope Coil | 8 String in a ring | 1 Rope Coil (32 m) |
| Rope Ladder | 6 Rope and 3 Sticks (rope, stick, rope in each row) | 3 Rope Ladders |
One Rope is one metre (one block). String makes 4 m of rope either way, as Rope or as a Rope Coil.
Hanging rope
- Place: use Rope on the underside of a block, or on the side of a block. It hangs in the space there, tied to what was clicked. Under a block it hangs from anything that can hold a lantern: a full face, a fence post, a wall, a chain, the underside of a slab.
- Extend: use Rope on any segment of a hanging rope to add one metre to its bottom. If something is in the way below the end, nothing is placed and the Rope is kept.
- Rope Coil: use it under or beside a block, or on a hanging rope. It unrolls up to 32 m straight down and stops at the first block in the way (air, water and plants such as grass let it through; lava stops it). The coil is used up, and the metres that did not fit come back as Rope.
- Water: rope hangs through water and keeps the water around it.
Moving on a rope
| Action | Rope | Rope Ladder |
|---|---|---|
| Climb up | Hold Jump (or push into a wall): 1.5 m/s | Push into it or hold Jump: 2.35 m/s (ladder speed) |
| Go down | Hold Sneak to rappel: 8 m/s, reached in about a third of a second | Slide down: 3 m/s |
| Stop | Let go of Sneak: hang still | Hold Sneak |
| Fall damage | None while on the rope; fall distance resets every tick | As a vanilla ladder |
Rappelling only protects while the player is on the rope. If the rope ends above the ground, the rest of the way is an ordinary fall. Sideways movement is limited while rappelling, so the player slides down the rope rather than off it; stepping off onto a ledge still works.
Catching a rope while falling stops the fall, as catching a ladder does.
How rope hangs
A length of rope hangs from its top segment; every segment below hangs from the one above it.
- The anchor goes, the rope falls. If the block the top is tied to is removed, or a segment is cut out, everything below the break falls and drops as Rope items where the top of the fallen part hung.
- Taking it back: break a segment by hand and that segment, with everything hanging below it, goes straight into the inventory (the rest drops at the player's feet if the inventory is full). Breaking the top takes back the whole length.
- Rope Ladder rungs hang the same way, except that a rung with a solid wall behind it also stays up on its own. A rope ladder down a cliff face stays where the cliff is; a free-hanging one falls with its top.
- Fire: rope is fibre. It burns like wool and lava sets it alight.
- Pistons pop rope and rope ladders off as items.
Common failures
- "Nothing to tie it to here": rope needs the underside of a block that can hold it, the side of a solid block, or a hanging rope. It cannot stand on the ground.
- "Something is in the way below the end of the rope": the block under the rope's end is not air, water or a plant.
- Took fall damage after rappelling: the rope ended above the ground. Add rope until it reaches the bottom.
- Sneaking on a Rope Ladder does not rappel: only plain Rope rappels. On a ladder, Sneak holds still.
