Rubber is a renewable HardHoof Core material used to insulate placed copper wire. It comes from Raw Latex harvested from rubber logs.
The Coal-Powered Metal Former makes the wire, and the Machine Workshop assembles the Coal Generator, Small Electronics Lab, and Electronics Frame. Rubber makes the exposed routes between those powered machines safe to touch.
Find or grow a rubber tree
Rubber trees are added during vegetal decoration in these vanilla biomes:
- Forest
- Birch Forest
- Flower Forest
- Plains
- Sunflower Plains
Natural placement uses a 1-in-12 rarity filter, then chooses a position within the chunk where a Rubber Sapling can survive. A generated tree has a straight trunk four or five blocks tall and a compact leaf canopy.
Rubber Leaves have an 8% base chance to drop a Rubber Sapling when broken normally. Fortune raises that chance to 10%, 12%, or 15% at levels I, II, or III. Shears or Silk Touch collect the leaves instead.
A Rubber Sapling can also be crafted shapelessly:
| Ingredient | Quantity |
|---|---|
| Oak Sapling | 1 |
| Slime Ball | 1 |
The recipe produces one hardhoof_core:rubber_sapling. Plant it on valid soil and let it grow normally or apply bonemeal.
Harvest Raw Latex
Use an untapped natural rubber log with an empty hand. The log drops one hardhoof_core:raw_latex, changes to its visibly tapped state, and starts a 1,200-tick (60-second) recovery. It cannot produce more latex until recovery finishes.
Each log tracks its own tapped state and timer, so different logs on the same tree may be harvested independently.
A rubber log placed by a player starts tapped and schedules the same 60-second recovery. This prevents a freshly placed log from yielding immediate latex; leave it in place until the bark returns to its untapped appearance.
Smelt Rubber
Smelt one Raw Latex in a furnace:
| Input | Time | Output | Experience |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Raw Latex | 200 ticks (10 seconds) | 1 Rubber | 0.1 |
The output ID is hardhoof_core:rubber.
Insulate wire
Use one Rubber on a placed copper-wire block. The block becomes insulated, stops contact shock, and keeps the same gauge and electrical properties. Insulation does not increase current capacity or remove resistance.
Breaking an insulated wire by hand returns the Rubber along with the Copper Wire item. The wire item preserves its selected gauge. Gauge selection, current limits, and shock conditions are documented in Electricity and Wiring.
Common failures
- A log gives no latex: it is still tapped. Wait 60 seconds for that individual log to recover.
- A newly placed log gives no latex: placed logs intentionally begin tapped and must recover first.
- A tree is absent in an old area: natural features appear during terrain generation. Explore newly generated terrain or craft a sapling from oak and slime.
- Leaves do not drop a sapling: the base chance is 8%; gather more leaves, use Fortune, or use the shapeless sapling recipe.
- Rubber does not insulate a held item: use it on a Copper Wire block after the wire has been placed.
- Insulated wire still has voltage loss: insulation prevents contact damage; gauge and resistance remain unchanged.
