An implant is hardware fitted into your body. You fit one at an Implant Bench. Each one gives a small edge, costs a little food, and stays with you through death. There are three: the Lung Filter, the Night Lens and the Neural Link.
How implants work
- Your body has three sites: lungs, eyes and brain. Each site holds one implant.
- To fit an implant, hold it and use the Implant Bench. It goes in at once, and the item is used up.
- To take one out, sneak and use the bench with an empty hand. You get your newest implant back, whole.
- To see what you carry, use the bench with an empty hand and no sneak. The K screen also lists each implant, under the Implant family, with what it does.
- Each fitted implant burns about one food point every twenty minutes.
- Implants stay through death. They are part of your body, like a mark.
- If the site is taken, the bench says so. Take the old implant out first.
Nothing is gated: the bench and every implant are Machine Workshop recipes from ordinary parts.
Implant Bench
Goal: fit hardware into your body and take it out again.
The bench is a Lead-Glass machine (Valve age, T3). It needs no power: the work is surgery.
| Ingredient | Count |
|---|---|
| Lead-Glass Casing | 1 |
| Silver Contacts | 2 |
| Motor | 1 |
| Glass block | 2 |
See Tech tiers for casings and parts. Open JEI for the layout on the Workshop's 5 × 3 surface.
The three implants
| Implant | Site | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Lung Filter | lungs | Takes up half of mine air's poisons: carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide. |
| Night Lens | eyes | Night vision wherever the light level is 7 or less. It goes away again in the light. |
| Neural Link | brain | Press J to open your Terminal from anywhere. It is also a device on that computer's bus. |
All three are made at the Machine Workshop, with no casing:
| Implant | Made of |
|---|---|
| Lung Filter | 2 charcoal, 2 rubber, 1 Silver Contacts |
| Night Lens | 1 glass pane, 1 vacuum tube, 2 Silver Contacts, 1 amethyst shard |
| Neural Link | 1 Logic Board, 2 Silver Contacts, 1 Network Card, 1 gold ingot |
Lung Filter
Bad air in mines carries poisons. The filter halves how much of them you take up. It stacks with a Delver's Pit Sense, which also halves it: together you take up a quarter.
Night Lens
Good for caves and night. It gives you night vision wherever the light is dim (7 or less) and lets go when you step into light. A potion's night vision is left alone.
Neural Link
Goal: reach your Terminal without walking back to it.
- Open a Terminal once. Your link now points at it.
- Fit a Neural Link at the bench.
- Press J anywhere in that world while the Terminal's chunk is loaded. Its screen opens.
The link follows the last Terminal you opened. If it is in another world, or gone, or not loaded, the game says so.
The price. The link is a device on that computer's data bus, kind implant, named for you. A program on that bus can use these ops:
| Op | Does |
|---|---|
vitals() |
Returns your health, food, position and dimension. |
say(text) |
Shows the text above your hotbar, up to 120 characters. |
jolt() |
Half a heart of damage. Refused if the last jolt was under ten seconds ago. |
Programs on the Terminal can use it, and so can anyone who breaks into that computer. Hacking is allowed in Hard Hoof; the game only keeps the server safe, which is why a jolt is small and rate-limited. Guard the computer your head is wired to, and take the implant out if you do not trust it.
First example
- Build a Machine Workshop and an Implant Bench.
- Make a Night Lens. Hold it and use the bench.
- Walk into a dark cave. Your sight clears. Check the K screen: the Night Lens is listed.
- Sneak and use the bench with an empty hand to take it out.
Common failures
- The bench says the site already has an implant: one implant per site. Take the old one out first.
- J does nothing: no Neural Link fitted, or you have never opened a Terminal. Open one once.
- "Not answering": the Terminal is gone or its chunk is not loaded.
