Coal Powered Metal Former

Alpha

Abbreviation: CPMF
Module: HardHoof_Tech
Status: Implemented in source; in-game verification is not established by docs alone.

The Coal-Powered Metal Former (CPMF) is the first processing machine in Hard-Hoof's technology progression. It burns coal directly to turn ordinary metal ingots into the plates, copper wire, and gears needed for the Machine Workshop, Coal Generator, and early electronics. It is not an electrical load and does not connect to the Hard-Hoof DC network.

Crafting

Use a normal 3 × 3 crafting grid:

I P I
_ R _
I P I
Symbol Ingredient Quantity
I Any #c:ingots/iron item 4
P Piston 2
R Redstone dust 1
_ Empty slot

The recipe produces one Coal-Powered Metal Former. Its item ID is hardhoof_tech:coal_metal_former.

Forming recipes

Select one of the three products on the Forming tab. The input slot accepts the selected recipe's conventional item tag as well as the shown vanilla ingot.

Selected product Input Output Work time
Iron Plate 1 iron ingot 1 iron plate 8 seconds
Copper Wire 1 copper ingot 2 copper wires 8 seconds
Iron Gear 4 iron ingots 1 iron gear 12 seconds

The outputs are hardhoof_core:iron_plate, hardhoof_core:copper_wire, and hardhoof_core:iron_gear. The same costs, yields, and times appear in the machine's recipe buttons and its JEI forming category.

Fuel and processing

The fuel slot accepts coal, charcoal, and coal blocks.

Fuel Active work time
Coal 80 seconds
Charcoal 80 seconds
Coal block 800 seconds

Fuel is consumed only while a valid batch can work. The machine pauses both progress and fuel use when the output cannot hold the entire result. It also preserves unused burn time while idle. Ingredients are taken only when a batch finishes.

Removing ingredients below the selected batch requirement resets that batch's partial progress. Selecting a different product also resets progress. Stored input, output, and remaining fuel stay in the machine.

Controls

The Forming tab contains the three product buttons, input slot, fuel slot, output slot, progress bar, remaining-time tooltip, fuel reserve, and a status message. The output slot cannot accept items.

The Side configuration tab assigns item-transfer behavior to Front, Back, Left, Right, Top, and Bottom. Left and right are named as seen while looking at the machine's front; the screen also shows the selected face's compass direction. Port changes apply immediately and use the shared machine-interface rules.

Mode Behavior
Input Allows valid selected ingredients and fuel to enter.
Output Allows finished products to be extracted.
Both Combines Input and Output behavior.
Off Blocks automated item transfer on that face.

Default configuration:

Face Mode
Front Off
Back Both
Left Input
Right Output
Top Input
Bottom Output

Hoppers and NeoForge item-transfer systems follow these settings. The former exposes items for an adjacent system to insert or extract; it does not push finished products into a chest by itself. Switching to the Side configuration tab does not stop an active batch, but machine slots are hidden and inactive on that tab.

First working example

  1. Craft and place the former, then open it.
  2. Select Copper Wire.
  3. Put one copper ingot in the input slot and one coal or charcoal in the fuel slot.
  4. Wait 8 seconds of active work, then take two copper wires from the output slot.
  5. Use those wires with plates and gears to build the next machines, or place wire as part of the electricity and wiring system.

Common failures

  • No fuel: add coal, charcoal, or a coal block to the fuel slot.
  • Waiting for input: the input must match the selected product and meet its full batch quantity. An Iron Gear needs four iron ingots.
  • Output blocked: remove the existing output or make room for the whole result. Fuel and progress pause while blocked.
  • Automation uses the wrong slot: Input faces expose both the ingredient and fuel slots, but each slot still rejects invalid items.
  • A hopper cannot transfer: check the physical face and its mode. An Output face permits extraction but does not actively send items.
  • Progress disappeared: changing the selected product or reducing the input below one full batch resets partial work.
